Understanding Track Sections

<-- Back to Route Tips

Visit The MSTS 2x2 Route Standard Tips and Tricks for even More info!

Update: I’ve been receiving a few e-mails about the names. It is confusing, as it seem that some pieces go by Degrees and others Radius. Many thought that (as in A1t1000r5d.s) that the 1000 was meters and the 5d was degrees. If you look at this Screen Shot of the A1t1000r5d.s, A1t1000r10d.s and the A1t1000r20d.s, You will see that they all have the same Curviture! Try it and put several 5d’s and 10d’s together to make them as long as the 20d.s

This was copyed from the Forums at Train-Sim.com with permission of the poster, Thanks Wewain!!!

  • "1t" means one track, "2t" means two parallel tracks, etc.
  • "100m" means 100 meters long.
  • "1000r" means that it's a curve with a radius of 1000 meters.
  • "10d" means that it's an arc of a circle that covers 10 degrees.
  • "crv" means curve (only used in older sections).
  • "lft" means the track curves left and
  • "rgt" mean right.
  • "strt" means straight.
  • "buf" means buffer (the bumper at the end of a siding).
  • "end" means a sharp curve for use on a switch to bring the siding parallel to the main-line track.
  • "mnl" means manual switch which the player can control.
  • "pnt" means point, a switch that can only be controlled in the Path and Activity editor.
  • "tun" means tunnel section.
  • "xover" means crossing, where two tracks cross over each other.
  • "yard" means yard, a section for use in yards where curves may be sharper.
  • "wtr" means water trough, for steam locomotives.
  • Also don't forget that:
  • you can flip sections with the "T" key,
  • you can rotate them, (or any object) around the y-axis, (which points up) by clicking the Rotate icon and holding the left mouse-buton down while dragging the cursor left or rigth.
  • you can rotate a section around the x-axis, (which points east) by doing the same as above, but dragging the cursor up or down, producing an incline to a track section.
  • If you drag the cursor on a diagonal, you will get both rotations at the same time, (probably not the results you want).
  • The Object Selector that the Route Editor uses is not very usefull as to tell you what your selecting. Just look at this screen shot. So I went thru them and here is what I found out about the names of the track, as here is what I wrote down as going thru them. If you look this over You will see a pattern and soon you’ll be able to find exactly what your looking for. You may even want to Print this out!

A1 is a single track,so A2 = double and so on. Tun is used for Tunnels, as is Rnd??

  • A1t100mstrt.s = 4 section straight
  • A1t1000r5d.s = 5 section 1000 radius slight curve
  • A1t1000r10d.s = 10 section 1000 radius slight curve
  • A1t1000r20d.s = 20 section 1000 radius slight curve
  • A1t100mstrWtr.s = 4 section black between the rails
  • A1t10mSkew.s = 1 section slight curve
  • A1t10mstrt.s = 1 section straight
  • A1t10mstrtWtr.s = 1 section straight black between the rails
  • A1t1500r10d.s = 10 section 1500 radius curve
  • A1t2000r10d.s = 10 section 2000 radius curve
  • A1t250mstrt.s = 10 section straight  (why 250 and not 10d? I don’t know)
  • A1t45dYardCrvLft.s = 45 degree Yard Curve Left (use in the Yards)
  • A1t45dYardCrvRgt.s = 45 degree Yard Curve Right
  • A1t45dYardLft.s = 45 degree Left Switch
  • A1t45dYardRgt.s = 45 degree Right Switch
  • A1t500mstrt.s = 20 section straight
  • A1t870r4dLft.s = Left Switch Long 870 Radius?
  • A1t870r4dRgt.s = Right Switch Long
  • A1tBuffer.s = Bumper (end of track piece) Also a A1tUSBuffer.s
  • A1tPnt10dLft.s = Left Switch Medium
  • A1tPnt10dRgt.s = Right Switch Medium
  • A1t2_5dLft.s = Super Long Left Switch
  • A1t2_5dRgt.s = Super Long Right Switch
  • A1tXover2_5d.s = Long Crossover
  • A1tXover5d.s = Short Crossover
  • A1tYpnt10d.s = Y Switch
  • This is Not the Complete list of the track pieces. But if You study this or Print this out, You’ll be laying Track like a MAD MAN!
