![]() Introduction ACOnet Association (ACOnet-Verein) was formed on 1983. The core membership of this association was the computer centers of all Austrian universities. ![]() Austrian PTT is sold under the name "MAN" ( Metropolitan Area Network) . Nevertheless it is offered throughout Austria based on 34 Mbps DQDB ( Distributed Queue Dual Bus ) technology. See the picture ![]() Access lines to the MAN with a capacity of 2 Mbps, operated with SMDS ( Switched Multimegabit Data Service ) are used to connect ACOnet', core-routers in Vienna, Linz, Salzburg, Insbruck, Klagenfurt and Graz to MAN/SMDS service. ACOnet core-router of the University of Vienna via ATM links, currently operated with speeds of 2Mbps to 10Mbps. In 1992 ACOnet was using the IP protocol set (instead of the X.25 protocol suite) at the lower layers of the network. Connections within the core and to the other sites were provided by leased lines at speeds of 64kbps and 128kbps. Increasing demand for bandwidth and services, another conversion and major upgrade to 2 Mbps-lines had to be proposed and done in May 1994. The Universities in Vienna, Linz and Graz are connected with highspeed ATM-technology. Using the ATM-technology for the whole ACOnet-Backbone provides high speed communication between all Austrian universities. ![]() * Nameservers * Mail Servers. * Recently the WorldWideWeb (WWW) * FTP Servers * Specialized server systems (Archie Servers) * News Service * Information Servers (WWW or Hyper-G) * on-line catalogue (OPAC) - (BIBOS) |
