Javelin-Catching up to the ponycars

AMC had wanted to change their stodgy, reliable family sedan image, much as General Motors wanted to do in the early '50's, which led to the '55-'57 Chevys and the infamous small-block. Without the resources of GM, however, AMC had to do some serious market research to find out if a viable, sporty model would meet with success in the sales area. With an Italian designer making the AMX prototype cars, response was overwhelming everywhere they showed them. Crafting a production car out of the design, however, was a far greater challenge. Renamed the Javelin, and redesigned for mass production, the Javelin was an instant sales success in 1968. A sporty two-seater model soon followed.
