One of Formula One’s most loved and admired drivers, Jean Alesi, has announced that he's quitting Formula One at the end of his 201st Grand Prix this weekend in Japan.
"Yes, it's correct," Jean told the press at Suzuka. "I finish the season and then I will do something else. At the moment I don't know exactly what I'm going to do. I'm talking seriously with Eddie Jordan. We have some plans together.
“It's time to stop and even if it's what I love most in my life - motor racing - after 200 Grands Prix you need to give the place to younger drivers and I'm glad Honda is happy to have the Japanese Formula Three champion (Takuma Sato) driving for them next year."
When asked for the reasons for his retirement, Jean said "When you love something you never think about stopping and we have to be realistic. There is a start, there is an end. Sunday night is going to be the end of my Formula One life as a driver, as a fighter.
"I have so many things to say, it's very difficult to explain everything in such a short time.
In one sentence, I would like to say that I have loved everything, the people who I work with in the good and bad moments, because it cannot be static; that's why life is interesting. Driving was exciting as well. I've been very sad and I'm still thinking about the drivers we lost, Ratzenberger and Senna at Imola in '94 but the rest was always very exciting."
Jean says that he will not be staying at home, "even though I love Kumiko and the children, I won't stay home all the time. I will do something."
He doesn’t know at this stage, what he will be doing next. He has said that he is talking to Eddie about a position within the team, no doubt he would be welcomed in the US should he want to join the CART series. He will take some time now to make the right decision. “We discussed with Jordan the decision on Sunday last week and since then I haven't really decided what to do,“ he concluded
