Chapter II: The Teardown 99/6/30

Pic: RD400F Frame In June of 1999 I began taking the RD apart to begin the process of rebuilding and modifying her. I took her out for a boot around the block to drain the last remnants of fuel from the tank (after siphoning most of it out). She started after the second kick after sitting for the winter and spring untouched. Once the fuel was drained, a good friend and experienced motorcycle guy and I took her apart into four main pieces: engine, front fork/wheel, frame, rear wheel. She was then carried gingerly, piece by piece, into the basement to hibernate and morph into a fully certifiable and presentable motorcycle.

Pic: RD400F Forks & Springs In the months that followed I stripped the triple clamps, clip ons and gauges from the forks, removed the caliper and wheel, and proceeded to take apart one fork leg, but stopped after the seal would not come out. This would not be an issue, however, as eventually I picked up a set of RZ forks as an upgrade.
