Reading Festival 2001
Sunday 26th August 2001
Review from Metal hammer magazine October 2001
The sky darkens across the arena as if it's another of Marilyn Manson [10] show props and the crowd wait obediently for the God Of Fuck to appear. The clock ticks by, with more and more people filling in to see the myth of a man who's supposed to have inspired children to kill each other. The lights drop, the large TV screens fill with an imae of guitarist John 5 (yes, there are other people in this band) and the crowd goes apeshit. Some of the assembled mass who have turned up to see Eminem later are booing, but thy'll get theirs when Manson comes on to do 'The Way I Am' with the rapping superstar at the end of the night. Hah!
MM rip into 'Irresponsible Hate Anthem' with a vengeance, as if to prove that they should be headlining tonight, and Marilyn's struttin his stuff, totally at ease with where he is right now. No one else today can touch this kind of theatrics that these guys put on, from the reverend stilt walking like a gigantic praying mantis, to rising up 30 feet in the air with his long skirt to Madonna Wyne acy rocking back and forth on his sprin loaded keyboard.
Their cover of Eurythmics' 'Sweet Dreams' has nearly everyone in the venue singing back and 'Beautiful People' is even more crushing live than on CD. A fittinf end to a very strong year for rock and metal - let's do it again next time.
10/10
