Reading Festival 2001

Sunday 26th August 2001

Review from Kerrang magazine 869 September 8th 2001

With the daylight separting we're ready for a bit of a spectacle and if anyones's going to give it to us it's going to be the self-styled God Of Fuck himself Marilyn Manson (KKKK). There is something quite sad about being so impressed by a man on stilts, but the Artist Formerly Known As Brian does look so imposing as he towers above the stage during 'The Nobodies' that it's hard not to be swept away by the hilarious grandeur of it all. He's an astute performer who knows just how to milk his audience but, lest we forget, there are also some songs thrown in among the costume changes and spectacular lights. His best might still belong to the Eurythmics with 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)', but the industrlised rasp of songs like 'Disposable Teens' and 'The Dope Show' ensure there's more to the Manson experience than just hollow visuals.
