Marilyn Manson on the K awards 2001...
"I first started reading Kerrang! when I briefly worked at a record store that used to stock it. I would tear it out of the plastic bag the import copies would come in, read it, then seal it back in there again, so it's pretty cool to be at the Awards all these years later. I've been to the Kerrang! Awards a few times before, but I can't really remember much about them because it's generally all about drunkeness and fighting - the good things in life.
There awards aren't boring like the Grammies or MTV awards. Obviously the magazine is mainstream, but there's a distinct underground feel to it and to the awards too. It's a cool thing to maintain that combination. Right now though, I'm sweating profusely because of this giant condom I'm wearing, although I have had time to interact with the other rock stars and sub-celebrities - wanneabe's basically.
With the Kerrang! Awards the actual ceremoney is pretty short, but the partying goes on for hours. I've never been able to understand how people can tolerate these three or four hour long shows, where you have to watch a bunch of stupid acts play, listen to people thank God before they start crying and there's all these big fat asses everywhere. Last year I remember the poor old woman - Britt Ekland - hurting herself, and she didn't have one of those bleeper things that old people have in America for such occasions. Not that she's that old, but I do remember comforting her.
I wouldn't say that I made a whole load of new friends, but I did meet this strange dwarf who turned out to be a guy from Cradle Of Filth. I thought it was a little kid dressed in a Marilyn Manson costume. I'm being sarcastic of course. No offence to him. Maybe.
I remember Slipknot causing quite a ruckus last year, because that was the first time I met them. I think they instigated some verbal fight with Limp Bizkit, which was pretty cool. That's all I remember from last year because I was drunk, and this year I'm doing exactly the same thing.
The coolest thing though is that there's usally a free Absinthe bar at the Awards, and that's definitely my favourite tipple. I really didn't expect to win anything this year and I was pleased just to be nominated, so it has been a very flattering and comforting experience to know that people still like what I do.
I think the rest of the band might be around here somewhere, I'm not really sure - they're either here or asleep in their own little pools of vomit somewhere. In fact, John 5 might be jerking off on someone as we speak, which he tends to do from time to time..."
