First the women hold the stalks of rice plant against the teeth of this spinning wheel which takes the grains off the stalk and loosens the tight case covering each grain.

Before they had this machine the women used to beat the stalks on the ground to separate the grains from the stalks. The woman works a foot pump to turn the wheel of the machine.
