Mogwai
4 satin ep

Released prior to Mogwai Young Team, this EP is another gem as fas as EPs go. You can usually find them at decent prices, and clocking in at just under 30 minutes, you definitely get your money's worth here. 4 satin has four songs, "Superheroes of BMX," "Now You're Taken," and "Stereodee." Plus an unlisted fourth track, which should have been listed, for it is just as good as the rest -- not just filler like so many other hidden tracks. "Now You're Taken," a great tune, features Aidan Moffat of Arab Strap -- a long time Mogwai collaborator.

This EP further proves that in the hands of Mogwai, feedback, distortion, and just pure noise can sound strangely musical. There's not many bands you can say that about. If you're not into the noise thing, check out Mogwai Young Team, which is the band's most melodious release to date. If I would have first heard Mogwai from this EP, rather than Mogwai Young Team, I probably would not have gotten into them. But after the magic og Mogwai becomes apparent, you will realize the hidden greatness to these noisy tracks.

Highlights:
[unlisted]
Funny how what I think is the standout tune was chosen to be the unlisted hidden track. It starts out as a fast-paced Mogwai jam, but something is wrong here. The whole mix has been treated to a sweeping, phaser-like effect, causing the entire track to swirl around the speakers. And just when you're getting pissed that they took a great sounding tune like this and screwed with it in this way, Stuart steps on his favorite distorion box and the song is brought into a normal mix. It them turns into, following a few rounds at the main riff, a noise composition with a strange horse-hoove like sound. Clocking in at a full ten and a half minutes, it's crazy, but amazing.

Superheroes of BMX
Starting with one of the fattest bass lines ever, this punkish track builds up more and more, over a distorted conversation between two Scots. The only two words I have caught so far are "Mogwai," and "Germans." It's a surprisingly short track, at only 3:34, but it seems even shorter because it fades out slowly. Great part: the feedback squeals before the loud chorus -- cliched but oh so cool.
