My Family

Updated 1 July 2005...

My name is Michael Ryan. I am originally from the Denver, Colorado area. I have a B.S. in Engineering Physics and a M.S. in Physics from the Colorado School of Mines.

During my career, I've worked in a number of IT organizations, mostly in "operations" type settings, with an emphasis on "location and navigation".

Currently I work for Keane as a consultant to the Virginia Department of Transportation where I help their Geographic Information Systems group in building and displaying "maps" of data used in various Transportation applications, like the VDOT On-line Transportation Map. (I'm particularly found of this application. I did most of the quality assurance work on the internal versions, and half the data layers this version shows were built exclusively by me.)

Two years ago, as part of this team, I received an award from ESRI, the leader in GIS software applications. I have posted my resume here for review.

My wife is Winifred Lambert Ryan.  She is from West Swanzey, New Hampshire. She holds a B.S. in Earth Science from Keene State College in New Hampshire, a M.R.C.P. (Master's - Regional and City Planning) from The University of Oklahoma, an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Colorado at Denver.

On December 13, 2003, Winnie was awarded her PhD in Coastal and Ocean Policy at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science with her doctoral research comprising a part of a NOAA Saltonstall-Kennedy grant titled "Community-Based Area Management Strategies and Capacity Reduction Programs for the Sea Scallop Industry." Yahoo!

Currently, Winnie is doing some consulting work, while seeking a permanent position. So, who knows, perhaps we'll be moving in the not too distant future.

Winnie and I live in Gloucester Point, Virginia. This places us just across the river, and about two miles from, the battlefield at Yorktown. We share our humble abode with a pack of four collie dogs.

Our daughter, Erin, graduated from the University of Arizona in 2001. She worked for a couple of years on the Space Infrared Telescope Facility at Jet Propulsion Lab, at CalTech.

Erin recently left JPL to return to graduate school at the University of Minnesota as a PhD student in Astronomy. You can also visit her web page, and learn more than you want to know about her, here.
