Classroom Procedures

Standard Classroom Procedures

How to enter the room and what to do once you have entered:
1. Walk in silently. Once you have gone through my doorway there is no talking for 10 minutes.
2. Hand your homework in to the Head Girl/Head Boy.
3. Go to your seat.
4. Get out a pencil/pen, your silent reading book and your binder.
5. Read the "10 @ the Top" instructions on the board.
6. Follow the instructions silently unless it specifically says you may talk quietly/whisper on the board.
7. Do a Preferred Activity if you finish your 10 @ the Top early.

What to do if you have been absent:
1. Do not ask the teacher what you have missed! It is YOUR duty to find out what you have missed. Follow these steps to find out what you have missed:
2. Ask a friend if you can borrow their assignment book; write down the assignment.
3. Visit Hogwarts Online (Homework Central on the website)and look up the date you were absent (make sure you look under your house). If the assignment has a link, click on it and print it out if applicable.
4. Check the "While You Were Away" folder in the Out Box.
5. If a worksheet or handout is needed, go to the handout file cabinet (the white one) and search for the handout (labeled by date and title of assignmment in chronological order).
6. If you are still confused, ask the Head Girl/Head Boy for help. However, they will not (and are not supposed to help you) if you have not tried all steps 1-5 before you ask them.

What to do when the school bell (end of class bell) rings:
1. Keep working or listening.
2. Stay in your seat.
3. Do not pack up your things. The bell is a signal for teachers, not a signal for students to leave. The bell does not dismiss you; the teacher does.
4. When you hear your teacher say "Have a wonderful day, I'll see you tomorrow. Please line up at the door." Quietly and quickly gather your things and line up at the door in a single file line.
5. The teacher will then open the door and you will walk in line to your next teacher's classroom.

What to do when you finish your work early:
1. Review your work.
2. Work on incomplete past assignments.
3. Silently read from a book of your choice.
4. If you didn't bring a book, find one in Australia and begin reading. If you are the first to get there, you may read in Australia.
5. Listen to a book on CD or tape in the Listening Center.
6. Do an extra credit assignment: write a 3 paragraph book review for 1 point extra credit.
7. Pass out papers from the Out Bin.
Nota Bene: Reading is not free time. It is part of the school's plan to improve your language arts skills.

What to do when you have a question, need help, wish to leave your seat or wish to speak:
1. Hold up one finger if you wish to speak.
2. Hold up two fingers if you wish to leave your seat.
3. Hold up three fingers if you have a question.
4. Hold up four fingers if you need help.
2. Wait quietly and be still until you are called on or acknowledged by the teacher.

What to do when you need to go to the restroom:
1. Write your name on the sign out sheet (above the phone.)
2. Fill out a hall pass and wait for teacher to sign.
3. Turn the sand timer upside down and book it to the bathroom. You have exactly 90 seconds from the time you flip the sand timer to go, come back and sign back in on the sign out sheet (without running.)
3. When you return, sign back in on the sign out sheet.
4. The consequence for staying too long in the bathroom (timer runs out of sand before you return to class) is an automatic 5 minute lunch penalty or a 30 min after school detention (up to the teacher's discretion.)
My Advice on This Topic: Don't risk it. Unless you're ready to go in your pants, hold it until your break. And don't even THINK about using a cellphone in the bathroom during class. We'll hang you up in the boiler room by your toenails if you even THINK about it. Seriously, though: don't do it unless you want to lose your phone and get in major trouble.

How to go to your next class once you have been dismissed:
1. Once your teacher has asked you to write down the assignment, write it down and quietly wait for your assignment book to be stamped.
2. While you are waiting, you may quietly gather your things and get ready for your next class.
3. Once your assignment book has been approved by Dumbledore, line up at the door.
4. The teacher, not a student will open the door.
5. Students will walk silently in a single file line to their next class. There will be a short break in between periods 2 and 3 where you will be permitted to go to your locker and pick up/drop off books, etc. This means that you should have your periods 1 & 2 ready before first period and that you should put those away during the short break and then get your books for both periods 3 and four.
6. My classroom rules also apply in the hallways. Any rule breaking and you will lose house points.

How to head all of your papers:
Name (first and last) written in upper left hand corner
Date written out in upper left hand corner under name (January 3, 2005)
Student pin number written in upper right hand corner with number sign (#3)
House written in upper right hand corner under pin #(Slytherin)
Title centered and underlined two lines down

example:
Draco Malfoy23S
January 3, 2005Slytherin

Balyn & Balan Summary #1

In this story, we meet a young knight named Balyn...

What to do when you hear a bell or see the teacher raise her hand:
1. Freeze and stop talking immediately.
2. Look at teacher.
3. Listen to instructions.
4. Act according to instructions.

What to do when you are tardy (late):
1. Enter the room quietly.
2. Put your late pass into the late pass bin.
3. If you do not have a late pass, fill out the "tardy form" and place it in the late pass bin.
4. If your submitted excuse (tardy form) is not accepted, your name will go on the board at the end of the day and or one check will be added to your name for every 10 minutes that you were late. If you were 20 minutes late and did not have permission from an adult in the building to be late, you will get your name on the board and 1 check (unless your name is already on the board); in that case you will get 2 checks.

How to check out a book from Australia:
1. Select your book.
2. Make sure you put back any other books that you may have pulled from the shelves.
3. Sign the book out on the clipboard in Australia.

How to go to Australia (not to check out a book):
1. Hold up four fingers (the "I need help" hand signal).
2. "Flash" your four fingers up and down to signify that it is an emergency.
3. I will come talk to you and ask you what you need.
4. Say "I need to go to Australia."
5. I may ask you for a reason; I may not, BUT you must have a good excuse.
Australia is a place students go when they have a serious problem and need time to process their thoughts and calm down.

What to do if someone should knock or if the phone should ring:
1. Be quiet and or wait for instructions.
2. Work quietly.

How to keep your notebook organized:
1. To see how your notebook should be organized, mosey on over to the podium during some free time and flip through Helena Handbasket's binder. We will set up our binders together in class, but H.H.'s binder will be available year-round. If you are feeling disorganized halfway through the semester, check it out.

What to do if you need help or have trouble understanding something:
1. Put 1 finger up to signify that you wish to speak.
2. Say "I don't get it."
3. Chances are that you're not the only one. People are sometimes afraid that they'll sound dumb. The only dumb question is the question that goes unasked. Be brave and take the plunge. You might even earn some house points for your bravery. As your teacher, I promise that I will never humiliate you and that I will try my best to go back and help you understand the material; if not at that moment, after school.

How to read your progress report and use it to boost your grade:
1. I = Incomplete
2. 0 = you have either scored a zero or have not handed in the assignment
3. EX = you have been excused from the assignment and do not have to make it up. It will NOT lower your grade. I might give you an EX for a book report if someone in your family died and you had to travel to Alabama for a week and weren't able to do it.
