GLITTER: Was the world ready to go back to the 80’s?

Putting aside everything that has been said about “Glitter”, we can point at the good spots and also at the shadows in this scenario.  On one hand I think the music is perfect: good instrumentation, nice vocals, a crossed over compilation of sound from the 80’s and Mariah’s natural style.  The acting performances from Max Beesley, Valarie Pettiford and Da Brat are quite acceptable and Mariah doesn’t do it so bad herself, but here we have the other hand which holds the script and the movie’s general lead.

Watching through each of the scenes in the movie, it seemed to me that all the characters were eager to speak their minds out but the lines were strictly closed and weak and made them look pale and dead, especially during Billie and Dice’s date at the restaurant, where the lines completely blew up everything.  The problem with the movie is certainly not Mariah, not the fact that she sings all over the film and not the fact that her lip-synching looks artificial (which is true, but she’s used to sing live in all her appearances as any authentic artist, so it’s not completely her fault, is it?).  The problem with the movie is that the main story is not told the way it should be told to capture everyone’s eyes.  The beginning looks great, with perfectly dosed timing and nice musical scenes, but after fifteen minutes, it turns into a flashbacking/flashforwarding nightmare that shows a lot of events in absolutely no organization or logical order and  personally, I lost interest from then on.  I say, without any fear, that if it wasn’t for Mariah, the movie would’ve been a bigger disaster. At least you can enjoy her dancing, her singing and, of course, the nostalgically awesome New York City before 2001.  Mariah learned the lesson more than perfectly, her new movie looks more like the kind of thing a natural artist like her would do, instead of just falling for stage lights, record company strategies (which she deals with constantly) and somewhat unjustified over drama.  I can’t wait to watch “Wise Girls” and really see what she has to give in acting.  I firmly believe her upcoming projects will prove what she says in one of the scenes in “Glitter” right; What makes you think that’s the best of me?…  “Glitter” sure isn’t.
