Momiji Fujimiya
Momiji is a 15-year-old girl who believed she was ordinary. But, as the heroine of the series, of course she's more than simply ordinary. She lives in Izumo, Japan, which is a place where many japanese mythologies have taken place. One day, after her purifying rituals with her grandmother, she meets a man named Kusanagi who wanted to kill her, since her long lost twin sister Kaede is dead. This moment would be Momiji's first time hearing the word Kushinada and learning the existance of a twin sister.
Momiji was told that her life is the hope of all the people in Japan, and when the time comes, she would have to sacrifice her life for the sake of mankind. Momiji, who was being a complete airhead, goes to the library and finally learned that Kushinada is a legendary princess. Of course, she didn't believe that she could be the Kushinada princess, because the princess was the only one person who can bring the evil Arigami to an eternal sleep, only by sacrificing herself and releasing their blood pulse.
On that very same day, she was suddenly attacked by the Yamata-no-Orochi (one of the strongest Arigami). She was almost killed by that Aragimi, until Kusanagi appears (which was the same guy that wanted to kill her before) and saves her life. Before the Yamata-no-Orochi is completely destroyed by the TAC, it shots a large vine which was originally aimed at Kusanagi but hit Momoji's chest instead. After that momen ta small mitama, or blue seed was on Momiji's chest that gaved her the power to sense the presence of Arigami.
Even with such a risky mission to exterminate all the Arigami, she still never forgets to put a smile on her face. She is a girl with high spirits and can be pretty dense at times. She has the specialty in developing good friendships with everyone around her (Like Kome and Yaegashi). Later in the series, she falls deeply in love with Kusanagi, but she's too shy to tell him. She has lots of competition...which makes it even harder to tell him (like Kaede and Sakura).
Mamoru Kusanagi
When he was very young, his parents were killed by the Arigami who're called Yamata-no-Orochi. This Arigami then gave Kusunagi seven mitamas, or blue seeds, that granted him super human powers like teleportation, shooting organic blades from his arms, shooting his plant arms, shoulder blades and others I can't name. His duty was to protect the Kushinada princess from the humans because the Arigamis believed that the humans would kill the princess and totally destroy the Arigami race.
Originally, Kusanagi had been protecting Kaede since her birth, and developed some strong feelings for her. But one day at the construction site, Kaede disappeared (they assumed she died), which left Kusanagi emotionally hurt. He thought he was unable to protect the one he loved, and he felt the responsible to protect the princess, and losing her was too much for him to handle. So one day he approached Momiji, for she was the other Kushinada princess. If he were to kill her, than he would be free from his responsibility. BUT he couldn't possibly even hurt her because she looked too much like Kaede. So, after fighting the Yamata-no-Orochi, he decides to protect Momiji from the Arigami instead because of the following reasons:
1) Momiji's mitama had the power to track down the location of the Arigami
2) He also wanted to fight the Arigami, who was always going after Momiji.
3) Since he originally protected Kaede, the Kushinada princess, he now protects Momiji from the Arigami. (The reason the Arigami attacks Momiji is because they have a special area called the Ceramic Field that would make the Kushinada princess useless when they are killed, so it won't harm the Arigami)
4) I dunno. . . . . .LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT??!?!! (my personal opinion)
He tries to act cool and tough in front of most people, and his life seems so be pretty lonely. He really hated the TAC for the fact that they were somewhat using Momiji as a specimen. But even with such a cold personality, he is really a caring guy. He looks after Momiji and often climbs into Momiji's room in the middle of the night! (Aside from trying to find out what kind of underwear she's wearing. . .) His one and only rival is the guy with eight mitamas, Murakumo. Kusanagi was once almost killed by Murakumo, which made him the top of the most wanted list.
