Momiji lived in a real home with her mother, while Kaede was adopted by Diatetsu Kunikida as a foster father. She was raised to be aware of her own identity as a Kushinada, and to be a speciman for the scientist to study the power of the Kushinada. She lead a very miserable life, often facing danger from the people who wanted to kill her in order to bring peace in Japan. Kusanagi, who had protected her since the day of her birth, has protected her from these people and eventually develop strong feelings for her.
After the attack of another person who wanted to kill her for Japan, Kaede starts wondering whether Japan was worth protecting, since the people in this country is full of hate and selfishness. She came up with the idea that the only way to purify Japan and turn it back to a 'green' country was to let Susano-oh take over the whole country. A few months after her disappearance at the construction site in the beginning of the series, she returns, this time sided with the evil Murakumo and Lord Susano-oh. Her sudden appearance affected Kusanagi the most because he couldn't accept the fact that she is now trying to destroy what she calls a 'filthy' Japan.

Similar to Kusanagi, he is also a human with implanted mitama. The thing that makes him different is he has eight mitama, one more than Kusanagi. Murakumo is capable of all the powers that Kusanagi has, but the one mitama grants him an extra ability to fly. Because of the fact that he had defeated Kusanagi many times, he claims himself being the "Perfect Being" while Kusanagi is an "Imperfect Soul".
Murakumo collaborates with Susano-oh and Kaede, so he can fulfill his wish in ruling Japan, and the world with Arigami. At first, he believes reviving Susano-oh would be the best way to take over Japan and also believed Kaede would be a maid of his Lord Susano-oh. But eventually, he ponders and think Kaede has been betraying him all along. . .(I don't think I want to spoil it any further ^_^)
