Chapter Twenty Nine

She grabbed her stuff out of the drawers and started packing them into her suitcase. This was hard to do of course, when your eyes were watering. She couldn't think of Nick, she had to do this, to leave now. She didn't want him to become serious. She didn't want to start having feelings for him, anyone but him. He wasn't her type. She ran around frantically grabbing this and that and stuffing it into her suitcases and bags. It's just as well, she didn't need to worry about if he was being faithful to her. She didn't need that kind of stress in her life, not with the kind of job she had. She was better off this way. There was a knock at her door and she went over to open it.

"Hi Alecia."

"Hey Brian."

"I just ran into Nick down in the lobby, says you're leaving." He looked around at the bags and her running back and forth frantically.

"Yeah, my apartment's ready. They finished early and I just wanna get out of here."

"Why the rush?"

"Why not? There's no reason for me to stay."

"There isn't?"

"No, do you know of a reason why I should stay?"

"Nick didn't talk to you?"

"He talked to me."

"And..."

"And what? We talked, I told him I was leaving and that was that. Nothing else."

"He didn't say anything else?"

"No Brian, where you expecting him to jump for joy or something? Sorry to disappoint you."

"No, nothing like that."

"Then what?"

"Nothing, it's nothing. I wish you weren't leaving."

"Well I'm gonna miss you guys, you're all really nice." She ran back into the bathroom and then over to her bag.

"Alecia..."

"I mean everyone says you're all nice in person and I guess no one every really wants to believe something like that."

"Alecia..."

"I mean hey I found out for myself and..."

"Aleica." Brian said, coming to stand in front of her, stopping her frantic pacing. She stopped and stared at him. "Alecia, are you ok?"

"I...I'm fine."

Brian led her over to the bed and sat her down. He reached up to wipe at the tears that fell down her cheeks. "The truth please."

"I'm...confused." She sniffled.

"About what?"

"About everything. What happened with Nick and me, I..."

"You what?"

"I know it was a...a...mistake. It never should've happened."

"You don't mean that."

"I do, I do so mean it. It was wrong of me, now I'm just like all those other girls. I couldn't hold out. I couldn't be strong. I didn't want to be used, and I was."

"Alecia, Nick didn't use you."

"Well I'm part of the blame. It's just as much my fault if not totally. I let him do it."

"Listen to me, he didn't use you. You're...different than any of the other girls Nick's been with. He wants to...to...still be around you and it's the day after. He's different around you, he...cares about you. I know you can't see it, but it's true. Take it from someone who's known him for the last eight years. I saw the way he used to be, we all have. You've changed him Alecia. You've done what the rest of us haven't been able to."

"What's that?"

"Make him stop and think about the kind of person he is. You made him want to change."

"No, he hasn't changed Brian. Not at all. I don't think he's capable of change. I don't have the time or the energy to sit around and wait. I have to finish packing and then I'm out of here." She stood up and started gathering the rest of her clothes. Brian watched her sadly. If only she'd stop denying what she was feeling, what was right in front of her, she'd realize the person she needed, needed her too. Brian got up and quietly left the room.
