The Afternoons came together to play a series of acoustic shows in London during Easter 1999. The response was such that they have been together ever since.

In August 1999 the band recorded their debut EP, My Beautiful Monkey, at Warwick Hall of Sound, Cardiff.

Two pressings quickly sold out in independent shops and won the band a Radio one session.

The band have contributed three tracks for the compilation CD Blueprint, released in August 2000 on 051 Records. These include a new version of My Beautiful Monkey, along with two new tracks; Memory of Earth and Falling is Easy.

On September 4th the band released their second single, A Change in Season, comprising two songs from their Radio 1 session, recorded at Loco studios, Caerleon, with Greg Haver. The title track has already won them radio airplay, having been broadcast on Radio Wales, and Steve Lamaqc's Radio One evening session.

The track was described by April Long in the NME as:

"...a black and white weepy film of a song, all cinematic wistfulness and broad gestures of longing... so saturated with classic, unshirkable sadness, it gives you the chills. Honestly."

The Afternoons third single; Calico is released November the 13th, on FFvinyl records. (catalogue no. ffvin009, distribution is by Pinnacle/ 3MV.)

Calico was recorded at Famous studios, in Cardiff, produced again by Greg Haver.
