In many cases, distorted audio output and/or channel swapping can be caused by interference from the video card. If screen activity, opening, closing, or resizing windows or even just scrolling changes or aggravates the above problems, this a good sign of video driver interference. There are ways to help remedy this.
- If you have not done so already, you need to reduce your screen color bit depth to 256 colors.

- If this doesn't clean up the audio, go to Control Panel / System / Performance / Graphics and reduce "Hardware Acceleration" by a click or two at least.

- If that doesn't clear up the problem, right click on your screen, select "properties", then "settings" and "Change display type". On the "adapter type" select "change" and "show all devices". Under "manufacturers" scroll up to standard display types and select a compatible VGA or SVGA mode. You will need to restart Windows.

- This last solution should clean up the audio, though your video performance will suffer. Until your video card manufacturer provides a fix for the driver your only answer is to get a different video card, or operate at the reduced settings.
Some video card drivers have fixes or partial fixes for these problems. For instance, if you have a Matrox Millennium card try the following:
In the Windows subdirectory you will find a file called system.ini. You need to add the following lines to this file, being careful to create a new section:
[mga.drv]
PCIChipset=1Resave the file.
Go to Control Panel->Display Properties->MGA Settings->Advanced->Performance and deselect the "Use PowerGDI Acceleration" feature.
