Direct digital transfer from an IDE or other CD ROM to the Multi!Wav card requires a digital output on the CD ROM drive. Some current CD ROM drives have this digital output and some do not. If provided, this connection would be located on the back of the CD-ROM drive and labeled as a digital output. This output is usually S/PDIF format and with proper adapters can be brought outside the computer and plugged into the Multi!Wav cards digital input as desired.
Most CD ROM drives have an analog output which is many times connected to a dedicated analog input on a SoundBlaster or compatible type card. This is not a digital connection and thus incompatible with the digital input on the Multi!Wav Digital series card.
A common misconception is that this is a direct digital connection. It is not, and is of limited quality. The connection is only used to play audio (red book) CDs through your computer speakers, and cannot be used to transfer digital audio directly to your hard drive.
SCSI and other CD ROMs are capable of transferring audio from a redbook type CD directly to the computer for recording using appropriate software (Samplitude, WaveLab, CD Architect, and others), though not in real time.
The audio can then be edited as desired and output digitally through the Multi!Wav card.
