***************

Maria kept trying to catch Liz's eye during French class in third period. However, her best friend was in a world of her own.

Liz was oblivious to her, and even to the teacher. As Madame Gaylin conjugated irregular verbs on the board, Liz stared off into space, twirling her pencil in her fingers. Maria suspected her thoughts were focused on one Max Evans. Or, more specifically, his relationship with Tess.

What kind of name was Tess anyway?

The bell rang to signal the end of class. Maria opened her mouth to speak to Liz, but her friend had already gathered her books and dashed out the door. Likely to catch her boyfriend before he became otherwise occupied.

She supposed that this could wait until later. Besides, Max wasn't ignorant. He wouldn't tell Tess anything incriminating.

Maria sighed and walked to her locker slowly. She and Michael had detention with Mr.Lockwood for being late this morning. Yeesh.

When she walked into the classroom, Michael was already there, sitting behind a desk. Mr.Lockwood sat at his desk correcting the exams from this morning.

Maria took a seat 3 rows over from Michael. He gave her a questioning look, which she ignored.

A call came over the intercom for Mr.Lockwood to come to the office to receive a telephone call. He sighed and shoved his papers in his briefcase.

"I trust I can leave you two alone?" He said over his wire-rimmed glasses. "Do not even think of leaving before I return."

Maria nodded dutifully. Michael just sat there looking bored. Lockwood just sighed and left.

Michael quickly hopped over the rows to the seat beside Maria.

"She's a freaking FBI agent!" were the first words out of his mouth.

Maria sighed, "We don't know that for sure. I mean, all we have are a couple sentences of a phone conversation. There could be a perfectly logical explanation."

Michael raised his eyebrows, "Name one."

Maria opened her mouth and then shut it. "Okay," she admitted, "I can't think of any, but we can't go jumping to conclusions."

"Why not?" Michael demanded, "This is our life we are talking about. If she's trying to take us down I vote we take her down first."

Maria sighed, "Listen Michael, what's she going to find out. Max isn't stupid. He'll be careful."

Michael shook his head, "I'm afraid he's beginning to put too much trust in Tess too soon."

"He's not like that," Maria said skeptically, "I mean, look at him and Liz. He's deeply in love with her. Besides, it took him forever to tell her anything, and then he did so only because he saved her life."

Michael shook his head again, "In a way, that's my point. Come one, he never got close to Liz this fast, not even when they were kids. Now, here he is with Tess. It took him years to get this close to Liz. I've never seen him like this before. At the very least, he's deeply lusting after her. Max is not thinking clearly. He's always had more sense than this."

Maria pondered that for a moment. Max was acting like a completely different person. She still didn't think he would do anything risky though. Besides, if they went to Max now he might think they just didn't like her. But, he needed to know. God, men were so annoying. Thinking with the thing between their legs rather then with their brains.

"So, what do we do?" Michael asked, interestedly. Something out of character for him.

Maria sighed, "Hell, I don't know. I'll tell Liz what we know. She can help us decide whether or not we should tell Max until we're absolutely sure."

At that point Mr.Lockwood chose to re-enter the room. He looked at the seat Michael had taken beside Maria, then said, "Listen, you guys can leave. I have a meeting to go to. Just don't be late again alright?"

"We won't sir," Maria promised as she and Michael all but ran out of the room.

"Listen," Michael said when they were in the hall. "You go talk to Liz. I'll go find Max and see if he's done anything stupid yet."

Maria nodded. Michael took off in the opposite direction.

Maria figured Liz would now be in the biology lab working on some extra project, and she would go there eventually. Right now, she needed to go to the washroom to re-apply some much needed make-up to cover up the evidence from her make-out session with Michael this morning.

Maria pushed open the bathroom door only to see Liz sitting on the counter, crying softly.
