Max on Liz sat on the roof of Maria's car, staring up at the sky.

"She's finally gone for good," Liz said quietly, breaking the silence.

Max nodded and glanced at her sideways, "But there will be others, you do realize that."

Liz agreed with a sigh. "This is just crazy Max. Why can't they just let you live your life in peace?"

"It might have to do with the fact that I'm an alien," Max replied with an awkward grin.

"You know what I mean," Liz replied. "You don't deserve this. Neither does Michael or Isabel."

"Liz," Max said, glancing over at her, We'll be living our lives in constant turmoil, always expecting to be taken away. Me life will likely never be peaceful. It won't be contented."

He reached over slowly to take her hand, "It make be completely selfish of me, and it may be unfair to you, but I want you in my life. If you wany yo walk away I'll understand, but it doesn't change the fact that I'll be in love with you forever."

Liz sighed and squeezed his hand back. "I'll be in love with you always too Max. I can't walk away from you, even if I wanted to. We can kick the ass of any FBI agent who comes along, and I bet they all won't be as psycho as Topolsky. No matter what happens, whether you get taken in or find a way home, I'll cherish every moment I get to spend with you."

Max slid closer to her and put his arm around her shoulders. They didn't say anything else, just continued to look up into the starry sky, wondering if he was from any one of them.

"What the hell were you doing scaring me like that?" Michael demanded of Maria who was lying on her bed, resting comfortably.

They were the only ones there right now. The others were taking care of Ms Toposky and cleaning up the mess in the office. Michael and Maria were alone in her room, and her mother was out of town.

Maria was still a little pale and weak from the loss of blood, but should be fine. Michael had wanted to take her to a doctor immediately, but she had firmly told him quote 'no way in hell'. He knew rationally that she was right, that would raise too many questions.

Maria sighed and closed her eyes. "I wasn't trying to be shot Michael, I was just trying to save your sorry ass."

Michael shook her head. "Don't shake this off Maria, you almost died back there. If we weren't aliens, you wouldn't be here to have this conversation with me."

Maria nodded, "I'll agree with you on that. As well, if you weren't aliens I wouldn't have been breaking into the guidance counselor/FBI agent's office in the wee hours of the night."

"You nearly died!" he exclaimed.

"So did you," she shot back. "I saved your life Michael. You could at least appear grateful."

That pulled him up short. This was not the first time he had gone through this with her. The first time was after she had helped save him after he had become sick from the cleansing sweat.

"You're not very good with gratitude," she mumbled under her breath.

"Didn't I tell you not to bother saving my life again?" he said. "I do remember saying those exact words. I didn't want to be indebted to anyone."

Maria's eyes flared. She hadn't heard the teasing note in his voice. "You ungrateful bastard! That teaches me to take a bullet for you. Next time I won't move a muscle and you'll be the one in excruciating pain, fighting for your life. In fact, I think I'll enjoy watching that..."

She was silenced with a kiss from Michael. When he sat up and pulled back, he said very simply. "Thank you Maria."

"I suppose you're welcome," she said with a sigh, propping herself up on her elbows. "God, you're so damn frustrating though. I do believe I seriously dislike you."

"No you don't," Michael said, shaking his head. "You love me."

She wanted to wipe that contented grin off his face and tell him to go to hell, but there was no point in denying it. "And you love me," she said with a sarcastic smile.

"Although I don't know why," Michael said with a smile as he leaned over to kiss her again.

"God Michael, what am I going to do with you?" she said exasperatedly as they pulled apart minutes later.

"I have a few suggestions," he said wickedly, pulling her into another kiss.

Maria pulled away, sputtering. "For God's sake Michael. Not an hour ago I was bleeding all over the floor, and that's all you can think of."

Michael shrugged, "Any better suggestions?"

Maria shook her head with a smile and pulled him down to her, "Not a one."

Agent Lobson was sitting at his desk, working over the paperwork for the next test study. Arrangements were being made for a place to conduct it. Maybe a change of location would prove the tests to be more effective.

There was a knock on his door. "Enter," he called impatiently, mad to be interrupted.

Agent Topolsky entered the tiny office and shut the door behind her. He shot to his feet.

"You better have them," he said in a menacingly voice, "I've got the higher-ups breathing down my neck. They want the tests to start now!"

The blond agent shook her head, "No sir, the kids are not with me."

"What the hell do you mean?" he demanded slamming his fist on the desk. "I told you not to come back without those aliens. How in the hell did three kids manage to outwit a federal agent."

She shook her head, "It's not like that sir."

"Oh," he said, crossing his arms, "It's not like that then? Well, why don't you explain to me exactly 'how it is'?"

"They are not aliens sir," she said

"What are you talking about?" he asked, "We were nearly positive about them. Even you were convinced. What happened."

Topolsky shrugged, "It was obvious. I managed to obtain skin and blood samples without their knowledge. The real thing, not something found at the hospital. They're completely normal sir. As well, I gave them opportune times to use their powers, and it never happened. As much as they want a new study, I wasn't going to bring in 3 human kids for the hell of it."

"How sure are you?" he demanded.

"100%," Topolsky said confidently.

"You better be," he said, shaking a finger at her, "Because I'm going to call my superiors and explain to them that there is no way in hell these kids could be from out of this world. And, you know that if you're wrong, there's a lot more at stake here than your job."

She nodded. As he picked up the phone, she cleared her throat. "Sir? May I go home? It's been awhile sir, and I'm tired."

"Just go," he said, waving his hand towards the door with a frustrated air.

She nodded and slipped silently from the room She acknowledged people on her way down the hall.

She entered the parking lot and opened the door of her car and slid in. She showed her security pass to the gaurd who let her drive out of the lot.

The blond lady drove far away from the office as she could and parked in some back alley.

If anyone had been watching, there was a bright light, and then it disappeared. They also would have seen a pretty blond woman shift into a native american man in a small town deputy's uniform.

The teenagers were safe again.

For now.
