Polana shivered in her bed. The cool air blowing through her make-shift weyr caught in her lungs and forced her to a unwanted wakefullness. She groaned and brushed the stray strands of red hair dangling in her eyes behind her ears. Then noticed why she was so cold.
"Dracan! Tolt! Gimmie back the blanket!" Polana scolded the two fire draces. Somehow, they had managed to pull the covers, which had be previously nicely wound around her, to the opposite end of the bed. Not only that, but they had made a nest of the soft furs for themselves. Polana let out an annoyed sigh and pulled the blanket back, earning two very surprised cheeps from the area around her feet.
Once again wrapped snugly in the blankets, Polana smiled to herself and settled further into the soft, down filled bed. The pillow beneath her head was fluffy and perfectly curved to her form. The bed was cozy and warm. The blankets were full and smelled of spices. Two sets of claws began pulling mercilessly at her hair.
"Hey!" Polana squeaked, batting at the two blurs of silver and brown above her head. She growled and dove far beneath the covers. Dracan and Tolt followed.
Anyone looking into the small weyr would have seen a large lump being chased by two smaller lumps beneath a now ruffled blanket. Chirps and squeaks filled the air as the three fought for supremicy. Finally, the inevitable happened and Polana moved a bit too close to the edge of the bed. En masse, the three figures and the blankets tumbled to the ground in a giant heap.
Polana stuggled with the blankets and eventually managed to stick her head out, followed by two lizard-like heads. "Great. Now look what you've done."
Dracan chirruped indignantly as if to say "Me?! How is this my fault?!" Tolt, of course, mimmicked his brother.
Her hair was a mess. She was trapped in two fur blankets with two immiture fire draces and she could barely breath because of the tangle of her nightgown. Yet Polana couldn't help but laugh at the antics of her friends. She swatted at each then watched as they over-acted their 'hurt feelings.'
"Come on. Let's get out of this mess." Which was easier said then done as Polana soon realized. After a few minutes of squabbling and rearranging, the three friends managed to squirm their way out of the mess. Polana stood, shifted around in her nightgown, then went off to get changed. Dracan and Tolt amused themselves by creeling loudly for food.
A few minutes later, Polana emerged, fully dressed and ready for the day. The flits, upon seeing the giver of food, launched themselves at Polana. Polana giggled and darted out of the way, then out of the weyr. This chase to the breakfast table had become routine.
Dashing down the long hallways, past the semi-awake occupants of the Sawnay adoption agency, Polana, Dracan, and Tolt dipped and dove their way to the dining hall. Flashes of silver and brown darted by her eyes as Polana swerved around one corner then another.
Now, normally a body in motion would remain in motion unless halted by a solid object. Let's say.... Mystic. Both Polana and Mystic went to the ground with a thump. Polana groaned and rubbed her sore head. Mystic shook her own and shakily got to her feet.
"Are you alright, child?" She asked gently, holding out a hand to Polana.
"Yes. Just.... dizzy." Polana groaned again as she got to her own feet. Mystic chuckled lightly, causing Polana to give her an odd look. She found the Warren Caretaker to be smiling happily. "What'd I do?" Polana inquired.
"Nothing, child. Nothing." Mystic's light chuckle remained dancing in her eyes as she accompanied Polana the rest of the way to the dining hall.
After breakfast had been consumed and Dracan and Tolt were considerably sedated from their meal, the four companions made their way back to Polana's weyr. Polana entered first and flopped down beside Flux's egg. She sighed lightly, resting her head against the warm shell.
"I wonder when she'll hatch." She whispered quietly. Mystic sat down gently beside her, her hazel-green eyes fixed on the small figure of her daughter. Dracan and Tolt landed near to Polana, thrumming deep in their throats.
"Soon, Polana. Be patient." Mystic spoke back with a kind smile. Polana meerly sighed again, a faint grin creasing the corners of her lips.
I can't wait til you get to see this world, Flux." She cooed to the egg. "It's so amazing. So many different things to see and do. Mystic's a great mother. I'm sure you'll like her. And Aaron can be your father." She chuckled lightly. "You haven't met him yet but he's pretty great. I know we'll get along perfectly too. Just you and me and all these worlds to explore." Her voice began to drift off slowly into silence as Polana drifted into daydreams. Though someone else seemed to have had enough sleep and wanted out!
The egg began to rock gently as its prisoner attempted an escape. Dracan and Tolt increased their purring, staring intently at the shimmering egg shell. Polana had yet to notice. Only when a loud crack followed by another resounded loudly in her ears did she finally notice the egg's movement.
"Mystic." She whispered cautiously. Mystic had been caught up in her own thoughts and hadn't noticed the egg's movement either.
"Hmm?"
"I think she's hatching."
Mystic blinked once then glanced at the egg. Hair line cracks were scattered about the violet and blue surface. Suddenly, the first large chunk fell to the ground. Mystic gasped in surprise then murmered a few quick words. Instantly, a bowl of meat appeared in front of them. Polana reached for the bowl with one hand, her other hand resting reassuringly on the spliting shell.
Flux pushed and strained at the hard shell, forcing her way into the world so amazingly described by her life mate. Her snout struck a particularly resistant piece and pushed harder. She refused to give up. With a loud snort and one final push, the shell snapped and sent shards flying everywhere. Flux's black hide glistened with the wet remains of her previous home. She yawned and fell over, still partly held within the egg. As her head thumped softly against a warm surface, she opened one eye slowly. Then the other. Both curious eyes focused immediately on Polana's surprised and joyful face. Flux grinned a draconic grin and opened her mouth to speak. Instead, she only managed a 'murraw' sound.
In the few short minutes it had taken for Flux to hatch, Polana was left in a state of stunned silence. Here was the most beautiful, black hatchling she had ever seen. As the creature in her lap made its first sound, both Polana and Mystic burst out in giggles.
Polana stroked the wet surface of Flux's head gently, gazing down at her life mate with loving eyes. "Hey Flux. Welcome to the world." In return, Flux scrambled her way towards the food bowl. Polana laughed again and began feeding the hungry hatchling. "You're gonna love it here."
