His is the story of riches to rags. The story of a prince who became a pauper in order to redeem the world. The tale of selfless, universal love. Siddhartha was born in Lumbini in Northern India as heir to king Sudhodhana. It was prophesied at the time of his birth, that Siddhartha would emancipate the world. But the king did not like the idea of his son becoming a sannyasin. So he built a palace for Siddhartha, where no old or sick people were allowed. It was provided with all enjoyments. The king also got him married at an early age. On a visit to the city one day Siddhartha was exposed to all that was hidden from his eyes. His first exposure to misery and suffering impacted so heavily on Siddhartha that he lost all interest in the pleasures of the world. And soon one night, the prince who had never known suffering, left his family and the palace without informing anyone and went away. He reached a place called Buddha Gaya and started meditating on the cause of suffering in the world. It is said that he sat under a Banyan tree for six long years mediating deeply on the causes of all misery. And then one day enlightenment dawned on him. Buddha started preaching his doctrine soon afterwards. His teachings stand out for their direct attack on superstition, On the emphasis laid on individual thinking Buddha was the symbol of compassion and urged his followers to be compassionate to everyone. In his own words "I took for no recompense not even to be reborn in heaven - but I seek the welfare of men, to bring back those who have gone astray. to enlighten those that live in the night of error, to banish all pain and all suffering from the world" He left this earth at the age of eighty on the same day that he was born and attained enlightenment called Buddha poornima or the fullmoon day of Buddha
