Title image: The Mother

Mirra was an unusual child. Even before she could read or write she had learnt to meditate. At the tender age of four she used to sit in her chair lost in deep meditation; preferring that over going to the church or even playing with her friends.....

Mirra was born on 21st Feb 1878 in Paris. Her mother was strict disciplinarian and ensured that Mirra grew up with that sense of discipline. Mirra was a fearless child and there are many instances in her school life where she handled children older than her, with consummate ease.

While still in school, between the ages of 11 and 13 years she had a series of spiritual experiences. Many great saints and spiritual thinkers used to visit her in her sleep and taught her. She used to call one of them Krishna' and was destined to meet him in real life.

Mirra was a good student and was liked by all. She also excelled in vocal and instrumental music. After finishing school, she started learning painting. She became so good in painting that her paintings were on show in many art exhibitions.

She went to Algeria to learn occultism. She stayed with a couple there and became proficient in occultism in a couple of years. In 1914 she reached Pondicherry and met Sri Aurobindo. She immediately recognised him as the guru she used to call Krishna in her dreams. She had found what she was seeking. She surrendered everything she had learnt and owned at his feet and was filled with an immense and vast peace.

She had to return to Paris in 1915 on account of the world war. In 1916, she left for Japan and stayed there till 1920. On 24th April 1920 she returned to Pondichery to settle down there for ever. The ashram took shape only after the Mother's return in 1920 and was formally announced on 26th November1926, the day the overmind consciousness descended down on earth. After this day Sri Aurobindo retired into complete solitude, leaving the work of administering the Ashram totally to the Mother.

Under the mother's benevolent eyes , the Ashram grew in many ways. She started a small school for the ashram children in 1943. And in 1952 established the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education. In 1968, she inaugurated Auroville - the city of dawn whose foundation urn contains the soil of more than 120 countries around the world.

She continued working till he last days and on 17th November 1973, left her human body.
