One of the main players in the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign has said he
cautiously welcomes the sharp rise in membership that coincided with Ireland's
ill-tempered football match with Israel in Dublin recently.
"Of course we are glad of the new interest, but we are very wary of the motivations of
these new members. We only want activists who are committed to the interests of the
occupied Palestinians."
The need for caution seems great given the apparent ignorance of some new members in
regard to Arab politics. Last night, an open forum discussion at a hotel in Cork turned into
a farce.
"We were having a serious discussion as to whether Abbas was a good replacement for
Arafat. Some idiot shouts up that he thought Benayoun would have done better, if Israel
had also switched to 4-4-2 and played the ball wide."
John Dillon, a new IPSC recruit in Dublin, was more pragmatic, "If the Israeli's steal land like they steal games, then count me in"
