What would Glen Hansard do?
Opinion - Julian McMurrough

As an aspiring singer/songwriter here in Galway I face many challenges on a daily basis. What Radiohead song should I start my busking session with today? Which hip t-shirt should I wear while I'm performing? Which worthy cause should the stickers on my acoustic guitar promote?

All of these questions are important. Each small detail says a little bit about who I am as an artist and where I am artistically. So when I'm stuck on a problem, be it trying to decide which colour Converse to wear with my charity shop chequered trousers or which vocal affectation to repeat at the end of each line of a song, I ask myself one simple question: What would Glen Hansard do?

Being that Glen is the godfather of Irish rock music, an unstoppable erupting geyser of talent and witty anecdotes I, and other musos like me, always look to him for inspiration. I mean, if it's good enough for Glen then it's good enough for all of us. So, whether it's spontaneously adding a bit from Willy Wonka every time he sings Star Star or hi-jacking the memory of Mic Christopher and doing shit renditions of HeyDay, Glen is paving the way for a whole generation of singer/songwriters to come.

Imagine it - the streets thronged with acoustic guitar playing Frames fans, bashing out classics like Fake over and over again - infesting the pubs, clubs and venues of Ireland and living their lives under the guidance of one simple question - What would Glen Hansard do?
