Scene 1: Song: Overture/O Muse!

Several people in white robes slowly glide onto the stage. One of them is carrying a walking stick. This is Homer and the Chorus of Muses. They arrange themselves into a standard choir position and begin.

O Muse/Overture

Homer:
Muse--
You playful goddess, look down upon your poet
Grace me with words to express these ideas.

(Chorus: Grace with inspiration)

Long ago in Sparta, a noble man
Born of haunted Atrean clan
Loved Helen fair and wed her, the girl with golden hair

(Chorus: Oo-oo)

Chorus:
Swear you love
Love me true
Helen, I can promise you I do./Soldier, I will marry you.

Homer:
But then came Paris by nightfall,
Stole the bride away with no sign how--

Chorus:
Helen, love

Homer:
O my wife,
Where art thou?

(Chorus: Where art thou?)

Chorus:
Menelaus/Soldier
Took up his great sword/Took up his silver sword
And told his elder brother/And told Agamemnon
To prepare his armies
Menelaus/Soldier
With his brother/Oh, set sail
Launched a thousand ships across the
Launched a thousand ships across the
Launched a thousand ships across the
Vast dark seas.
Oh
Go, Soldier, go
From the fields and hills you know
(Altos: Leave your homeland)
Touch again her hair, see her standing there/Find your wife; rescue Helen

Homer:
You promised, you swore it

(Chorus: Oo, oo-oo oo ooo)

Don't try to ignore it

Chorus:
It's time you went and brought her back
White walls to attack, soldier of the pack
And don't look back

(Homer: Soldier, don't look back. Don't look back.)

Having said this much, the Chorus recedes to an obscure corner by the stage.
