A GRADUATE police sergeant abused his rank and office, by pocketing more
than $34,000 from various people through cheating and corruption.
P. Rajagopal, 32, a first offender, was sentenced yesterday to six years'
jail, five strokes of the cane and a $3,000 fine.
He pleaded guilty to seven charges of criminal breach of trust, cheating,
corruption, attempted extortion, retaining official documents and failure to
attend reservist training between Aug 1, 1995 and Aug 7 this year. Eleven
other charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Keppel fined $300,000 for giving $8.53 m in bribes for contracts
KEPPEL Corporation pleaded guilty yesterday to giving bribes totalling $8.53
million to a manager in a British subsidiary of Exxon Corporation between
January 1992 and May 1995.
The money -- given to Cornelius van der Horst, 56, repair and technical
manager of Petroleum Shipping, based in Southampton, England -- was meant to
reward him for helping Keppel obtain contracts to maintain and repair 17
tankers of the oil giant Exxon.
District Judge Adrian Soon fined Keppel, a first offender, $300,000 -- a
maximum of $100,000 on each of three corruption charges.
Fourteen other charges against the Singapore company were considered during
sentencing.
