VREDEFORT DOME

According to geologists this lunated landscape was formed by a giant meteorite of approximately 1 cubic metre some 4000 million years ago at Vredefort. The inside rim of the dome stretches over a distance of 42 km.
Deep gorges appear between the ridges where water streams eventually join the Vaal River.
In contrast to the flat plains of the Northern Free State and the Northern Province, the Dome area offers panoramic views over the Vaal River valley from the ridges.
Except for a favourable frost-free climate, the region is also rich in vegetation, wild and bird-life. Various exceptional game farms and reserves can be visited here.
