Tips for Parents on Preventing Child Obesity

•  It is not required that children finish their bottle or meals, parents should be able to recognize their child's appetite.

•  Whenever possible stay away from sugared or pre-prepared foods.

•  Decrease the quantity of high calorie foods stored in the home.

•  Supply your child with a healthy diet; particularly with 30 percent or fewer calories obtained from fat.

•  Make certain that sufficient amounts of fiber are presented in the child's diet.

•  At approximately 2 years of age, whole milk can be safely substituted with skim milk.

•  Make sure not to give food as a reward for an action or event, or even for your own comfort.

•  Do not bribe your kids with sweets in exchange for a finished meal.

•  Decrease the amount of TV your children are watching.

•  Active play should be promoted.

•  In order to get some form of activity out of your child set up family activities such as picnics, walks, visiting the park or playground, and other outdoor activities.
