CARE OF YOUR UNIFORM
Back
The Canadian Navy League Cadet uniform is based on the work dress of the Royal Canadian Navy.  WEAR IT WITH PRIDE, for it distinguishes you as a very special kind of cadet.

CAP: Also known as a “Port and Starboard” or “White Top”. Your cap is made of white vinyl. It is easily cleaned with a damp cloth and a little detergent. If you have a persistent stain, try a small amount of toothpaste and an old clean toothbrush. DO NOT GET THE CLEANER ON THE BLACK PART OF THE CAP. WATER WILL MAKE THE COLOUR RUN.- The cap is to be worn at the width of one finger above the eyebrow. The front cap seam is centered directly over the nose with the bow over the left ear. The chin stay must be sewn to the cap at the correct length. Red is on the left, green on the right.

LANYARD: Your lanyard is made of white cotton, and is easily cleaned with a bar of hand soap and warm water. Let it drip dry over a clothesline or towel rack. Wash every week- The lanyard shall be worn around the neck, under the epaulets. The knot at the second button, looped at the fourth with the end tucked into the left breast pocket. In the old days it was used to secure the Seaman’s Dirk or Rigging Knife.

SHIRT: Your shirt is made of dark blue polyester/ cotton, and is machine washable and dryable. The badges on your shirt do not have to be removed. When your shirt is dried... IRON SLEEVES FLAT. One crease in the front, one in the back. Shoulder flashes are centered ½ inch from the epaulet. - The shirt is always worn tucked into the trousers with ALL buttons done up. If an undershirt is worn, it needs to be white and v-necked.

BELT /GAITERS: Your belt and gaiters (where applicable) are made of light white canvas. Remove your belt buckles and keepers before you wash the belt. Polish the gaiter brass first before you wash the gaiter. Tape the cloth first with a cheap grade of masking tape before you polish. Remove before you wash them. Place your belt and gaiters in a pillowcase or net bag and tie the top. It can be washed in a machine. Hang to dry. It will prolong the life of the canvass. DO NOT APPLY DIRECT BLEACH. Spot removers may be used sparingly.- The belt is to be buckled at the center, and adjusted to the correct length. Gaiters are to be worn over pant bottoms with buckles to the outside and rear.

TROUSERS: Your bellbottom trousers are made of a blue 65% polyester/35% cotton blend material and are machined washed. DO NOT MACHINE DRY! Ensure that your trousers are pressed weekly with an iron. Your trousers are to be pressed insideout and the legs ironed from seam to seam with NO CENTRE CREASE.- The trousers should touch the instep of the boot without bagging .Do not cut the material. Bellbottoms were originally designed to not waste material and be able to be pulled over the boots under water. The legs were tied and air was trapped in them to use as a float. At one time they were pressed in 7 creases representing the7 seas. This way they could be stored in a duffle bag and still look presentable once put on without re-ironing.

BOOTS: Your foot wear is to be clean and polished to a high shine every week prior to parade time.- The boots are to be laced straight across.
