When making or buying toys be sure to check for loops that toes and
beaks can get caught in.
Watch for pointed and sharp objects on toys.
If you have toys with chain on them, cover the chain with colored
wood, wooden beads or toys so toes and beaks don't get caught.
Cotton rope on toys can be a SERIOUS danger to birds!!! Only use rope
toys under supervision, the rope frays and birds can get their toes or
beaks entangled in it. Resulting in toes or legs having to be
amputated, or the bird may strangle itself trying to get free.
Toothbrushes as toys is a definite no-no!! Some toothbrushes have metal
in them to hold the bristles in place and can cause metal poisoning. The
bristle is made of nylon which can be toxic to birds.
When
using toys with bells make sure it is the appropriate size for your
bird. Example: a Parakeet bell is not appropriate for a Cockatiel.
Check the clapper inside to be sure it is properly secured. Large beaks
will destroy these quickly and can swallow it. If you use old bells
check to be sure they have no lead in them. Cover the chain that is on
the bell with wood toys or beads so toes and beaks don't get caught.
If you use locks or clips to hold cage doors, etc. closed. Check them to
make sure your bird can't get their tongues stuck in the locks or that
the clips don't allow your birds to get body parts stuck in them. I had
a Timneh get its neck stuck in a clip that had a hook on the opposite
end, luckily I was home (I work here!)
When you buy or make toys make sure it is safe. Look over the toy like
you were buying it for your newborn (because you are). Pull, tug and twist
on that toy, inspect all grooves (run your fingers over edges), do anything
to be sure it is a safe toy. After your bird has used it a while go back
and check it again to be sure nothing is fraying or wearing out.
