WHICH ARE THEY MALE OR FEMALE?? |
One of the main problems that peolpe are faced with owing cavies is to whether they are male or female. |
I dont know how many times that I have heard member of the public say "we were told by the petshop that they were both females / both males and they had babies" - where one mysteriously changed sex after purchase. Below is a way that you can double check yourself whether you have male or female cavies (when they are older there is a definate difference, however when they are younger they often look very similar). Often people will check the sex of a cavy by gently pressing down above the abdomen - in the males the genitals will appear, in the females nothing will appear. However - if this test is done incorrectly, they genitals of the males will not appear, and therefor you may think that this pig is a female - a common mistake. You can generally tell just by looking at the genitals of both sexed cavies. Below is a clear diagram showing the obvious differences. |
THE FEMALE CAVY |
On the female cavy, when looking at the genitals a Y is clear. THE MALE CAVY |
When looking at the male genitals, above the Y a circle with a dot centre appears |
