4. A flag that is emotionally uplifting

 

The flag inspires New Zealander’s. For over 100 years men and women have fought, and too often died, under our flag; they have represented their nation in international sporting arenas; and participated in other international events for their country. But a flag does not inspire emotion or respect by itself, but rather for what it represents. An abstract symbol on a simple rag could do that. We are lucky to have an inspiring flag.

 

 5. The flag is a great design

 

The flag is an inspired design: simple, effective, and clear. The genius of the design rests primarily on its simplicity; there are no fussy details. The colours are bold and effective. The flag can be easily recognised over a great distance.

 

6. The flag honours our past

 

The flag represents 135 years of tradition. The flag has flown at sporting events throughout the world. New Zealander’s victorious at competition have worn or carried the flag with pride. It has been seen on our ships, aircraft, and vehicles throughout the world, whether in trade, competition, or war. Only 15 countries have a flag that has been in continuous use for longer than ours.

 

7. A flag that carries one simple message

 

The flag clearly says New Zealand.  Its designers didn’t attempt to reflect all of the characteristics that made New Zealand what it was in 1869. That would have been impossible. But a flag is not meant to represent contemporary society. That would require a complicated patch
