Wild Magic is the first book in the Immortals quartet.
Veralidaine Sarrasri, recently orphaned, is hired by Onua Chamtong (horsemistress of the Queen's Riders) to drive a herd of ponies to Tortall. Along the way, it becomes clear that Daine's "talent" w/ animals is more than just a talent- it's magic. Soon Daine meets the great mage Numair Salmalin who becomes her teacher. He tells Daine that she has Wild Magic, a rare form of magic that can, in cases, create a bond between the person and animals.
