The FBLA mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. Dr. Hamden L. Forkner, head of the Commercial Education Department of the Teachers College of Columbia University, is responsible for developing the FBLA concept in 1937, finally being accepted an official sponsorship of FBLA.

The purpose of FBLA is to provide, as an integral part of the instructional program, additional opportunities for secondary students in business and/or business related filed to develop vocational and career supportive competencies and to promote civic and personal responsibilities.
