24 March 2002 - Old Thorntonians Vets 4 v. Old Dorkinians Vets 4

OT Vets somehow contrived to draw 4-4 against Dorkinians Vets on Sunday despite having around 75% of the game and Dorking only mustering about 5 attacks ! For the whole of the first half OTs took the game to ODs and yet found themselves 3-1 at the break. The second half was a great improvement and OTs were briefly ahead at 4-3 only for ODs to snatch an equaliser near the death.

The game was only a couple of minutes old when ODs took the lead. A hopeful punt over the back four led to indecision in the OTs defence and Dorking's centre forward crept in to slip the ball past Trevor. Undaunted, OTs returned to the attack, stretching the Dorking defence on one side and then the other but without creating any clear opportunities. Twenty minutes had elapsed when ODs doubled their lead in a near carbon copy of the first goal. Again it started with a hopeful punt into the OT box and again the lack of decisive action allowed a Dorking forward to slip in between Jeff and Trevor and toe the ball into the corner of the net. With a rising sense of disbelief OTs redoubled their efforts and pounded the Dorking area with crosses from left and right. Incredibly on one of the few occasions when they were able to get out of their half, Dorking managed to score again. It seemed as if OTs had enough players back and yet one slide rule ball down the middle released the Dorking centre forward who skipped past Trevor and finished comfortably. OT patience at this stage was wearing very thin and heads might have dropped had Tim not managed to get a goal back near the stroke of half time. A more incisive move than usual gave Tim the chance to hit a shot across the Dorking keeper and it finished up in the back of the net via a Dorking shin. Thorntonians were back in the game and self-belief had returned.

OTs line-up changed considerably at half time with Eddie, John Whiting and Andy Hucks being replaced by Dickie, Jeff Clarke and Steve Frost but the result was much the same - Incessant OT pressure but few good chances. Just when it seemed OTs efforts were on the wane Tim scored a superb solo goal to out them right back in contention. Picking the ball up on the far right he drifted right over to the inside left channel before unleashing a drive into the top corner that left the keeper frozen to the spot. OTs began to look dangerous with every attack and when Alex was fouled on the right wing Andy was able to float a free-kick to the far post where Steve Frost ghosted in to finish decisively. With the scores level and both teams looking a bit ragged the game ranged from end to end of the big Pixham Lane pitch. Finally Lady Luck smiled on OTs when the referee awarded a penalty against a Dorking defender for handball although it appeared to be ball to hand rather than the other way round. Andy Nic bravely took responsibility and he appeared to have placed the ball confidently into the top corner. Sadly the ball hit the bar, the keepers backside and the post before dropping out and being hoofed to safety. Andy was not to be denied, however, and minutes later he danced through the Dorking defence, drew the keeper and smashed the ball into the back of the net. Finally OTs were in the lead. Surely the game had no more drama left. Sadly it did as in a late flourish ODs attacked for one last time and a good ball through the crowded OT box found the Dorking winger who slid the ball past Trevor and finished the game. In stunned disbelief the OT players left the field not knowing whether to feel proud that they had got back into a game or frustrated that they'd failed to win a game they had dominated.
