CONSTITUTION WEEK IN YORK, MAINE The Old York Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and Old York Historical Society collaborated for the celebration of Constitution Week September 17 to 24, 2003 with an exhibit at the York Public Library on 15 Long Sands Road in York, Maine. The exhibit featured objects from the historical society's collections illustrating the households of York's two elected delegates to the Constitution Convention held in Boston in 1788. Esiasis Preble, a Tavern keeper and gentleman, Nathaniel Barrell were instructed to vote against ratification of the proposed constitution. The Massachusetts Convention approved the constitution by seventeen votes. Esiasis voted against and Nathaniel Barrell voted for the constitution. The exhibit presented copies of the individual state paper money struck by each state, a copy of the constitution and period writing implements. Suggestions for further study of the strife involved with creating a federal form of government were given; as well as an opportunity to read the published speech of Nathaniel Barrell. Books were given by the Old York Chapter DAR to the York Public Library for circulation to enlighten children in the process of creating the United States of America and learning about general household living in 1788. This project was part of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution educational program focusing on the Constitution during September. The York Public Library was furnished with bookmarks for distribution by the Old York Chapter. Regent Virginia Spiller designed and researched the exhibit with Registrar Cindi Young-Gomes and Curator Thomas Johnson of Old York Historical Society. The exhibit ended December 1, 2003. NSDAR Partners with the Department of the Navy in "Project Patriot" The National Daughters of the American Revolution formed a partnership with the Department of the Navy to sponsor the crew of the nuclear aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis. The Stennis has a crew of 5,100 sailors and marines and is currently deployed in the Arabian Sea as part of "Operation Enduring Freedom". "Project Patriot" is a grassroots volunteer effort to send thank you cards and "patriot packages" containing items such as t-shirts, candy, prepaid calling cards, computers, books, and videos to the crew of the ship. To learn how you can be a part of this great project go to the following web site: www.projectpatriot.com DAR SCHOOLS NEED YOUR LABELS AND YOUR AT&T POINTS: Our chapter with other national chapters of DAR continues to save Campbell product labels for education and the DAR schools. The chapter DAR school chairman mails these labels in batches of one hundred to the school of our choice. This term the chapter chose to send all the labels to Hillside School in Marlboro, Massachusetts. These schools receive credit to purchase major equipment such as computers. Last year Hillside School received a major grant that they had to match with labels, so Old York Chapter decided to send all our labels to them in hopes they would succeed. AT&T POINTS: Our chapter chose Crossnore School, in Crossnore, NC, to receive the points from those of us who have AT&T service. There will be no charge to your phone bill for enrolling in this program. Once you are enrolled, you have nothing else to worry about. AT&T will add you long distance points to the Crossnore Account each month automatically. The school with our help can get free computer hardware products. They earn five points for every dollar we spend on qualifying AT&T services. To enroll: call 1-800-232-8200. You will reach a computerized enrollment program. Press 1 for enrollment and follow the directions. Crossnore's school identification number is: 04155345. See their website at www.crossnore.com.
