Volunteering Opportunities

Given out at April 16, 2002 meeting

Since it's difficult for everyone to do something together, here are some ideas you can do on your own:

The Judeo-Christian Outreach Center needs tutors and mentors from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays or Wednesdays. Volunteers help children between 6 and 10 years old with homework, craft projects, computer activities and group and individual games. Call 491-2846

Virginia Beach Volunteer Council- The council has volunteering opportunities for young and old. Call 427-4722

Parent Connection- The YMCA of South Hampton Roads parent support group needs volunteers for its children's program while parents attend group one night a week at the Mount Trashmore YMCA. Call 622-9622, Ext. 19

Virginia Marine Science Museum has a family volunteer opportunity. Positions are available for people 11 years old to adults to teach others about Virginia's natural area. All positions require at least 4 hours a week. Weekend positions available. Call 437-6020.

EQUI-Kids- This therapeutic riding program needs volunteer leaders and side walkers for ongoing therapeutic horse riding lesons and to help clean up around hte farm, especially during weekdays and for Saturday morning barn work beginning 1 to 8 a.m. Horse experience is a plus, but not needed. Environmental Activity Day- High school science students ages 13-19 are invited to an environmental education activity 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hampton Roads Sanitation District's Atlantic Plant- Progress Farm, 645 Firefall Drive. The event is hosted by Ocean Lakes High School, the Virginia Water Environment Association, Hampton Roads Sanitation District, Virginia Beach public utilities and sheriffs departments and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. A barbacue lunch will be provided. Mayor Myera Oberndorf and Virginia Water Environmental Association president Carol Isenhour will be guest speakers. There will be a tour of the wastewater treatment plant as well as challenge team competitions. Participants must be registered as members of high school science. National Youth Service Day- Saturday, April 27 from 9-12 pm. Youth volunteers are needed to do yard work, painting and light maintenance at Camp Apasus, a program of the Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast. Through the Girl Scout Day Camp program, girls are challenged and encouraged to reach for and achief their best. Camp Apasus is located off Granby Street next to Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk. Supplies will be provided. If you plan on participating, pick up a registration form from the KC table/cart outside Mrs. Thompson's office in the library. Parental consent is required.
