Safety Tips for the Outpost

  • Outdoor Cooking and Sanitation (Food Safety). An important concept to instill within the oupost is proper sanitation (storage and handling) around food. Understanding how food and eating utensils become contaminated should be one of the key subjects when conducting training for leaders and boys.
    · wash hands before handling any food (even if still in the packaging), or handling clean containers and utensils
    · keep perishable unprepared food (such as raw meat, eggs, milk, etc.) cold, and hot foods hot to prevent bacterial buildup
    · keep dry goods dry
    · store food out of the reach of critters (such as insects, mice, rats, racoons, mountain lions, bears, aligators... you get the picture)
    · use good dish washing practices. Cleaning dishes on the trail is done differently than on a regular campout (as shown in the "Adventures in Camping" available from Gospel Publishing House)
    · use only designated latrine areas, ensure latrines are far enough away from camp area and water sources to prevent contamination

  • Outdoor Activity Safety & Etiquette
    · only Royal Rangers who hold a Cut & Chop card may use knives, axes, and saws in and around the camp, and then only in designated areas
    · observe fire safety rules, also a stick put in the fire remains in the fire
    · no running in the camp, you may trip and hurt yourself, someone else, or damage property
    · if an item doesn't belong to you, don't use it or take it without the owner's permission
    · no one wonders off without permission from a commander and without a buddy
