Seasonal Modifications to Backpacking Equipment

    Warm Climate Modifications
  • Short sleeve shirts (teeshirts work best) and shorts (take a long sleeve shirt and long pants just in case the weather turns cooler, if you are in a part of the country where the temperatures may dip into the 60s)
  • Swimsuit (if there's a swimming hole around)
  • Sandals or camp shoes (to wear after getting to your camp site so that your hiking boots/shoes can air out)
  • Lightweight bedroll (blanket, padded mat, and plastic sheet if not using a tent to sleep in)
    Cold Climate Modifications
  • Insulated hiking boots (wear wool socks, silk liners, etc. to wick moisture away from your feet and prevent trench foot), waterproofed
  • Layered clothing (long-sleeved teeshirts layered with maybe a lightweight waterproof jacket or sweatshirt on top, remove layers as you hike and begin to sweat to keep from overheating and ending up with soggy clothes, which will quickly give you a chill when you stop moving)
If the weather is expected to be below 40 degrees F, a heavier jacket may be desired, which can be opened up to allow your body to breath as you heat up from hiking.
  • Insulated gloves
  • Pullover hat to help keep body heat in when you aren't being active
  • Thermal underwear
  • Heat packets (self-contained chemical or thermal heating, be careful when using, follow directions or you could burn yourself)
  • Lip balm (chapstick, blistex, etc.)
  • Insulated bedroll with the appropriate weight of material for the temperatures expected
  • Ear muffs
