1828 the
first of the "Twin Lights" of Navesink Light
Station was constructed. In 1841, the light towers were
equipped with Fresnel lenses. This was America's
first use of this revolutionary lens and the lights were
called the best on the coast of the United States.
The
present lighthouse was built in 1862. In 1883, this lighthouse
became the initial first-order light to be fueled by kerosene
and in 1898, it became the first lighthouse in America to
become electrically powered light with the installation of an
electric arc bivalve lens in the south tower. It was
the most powerful lighthouse in the nation.
Its light could be seen for 22 miles at sea. In
1949 Navesink was decommissioned and is currently a state park and
museum.
