Considerations Before Choosing A Dog

When deciding to purchase a dog for your family, keep in mind that a dog will demand a lot from you.The consideration are:

  • Lifestyle
When looking for a dog that fits your lifestyle, think about how you live, are you free of allergy problems?Research different breeds, and then make an intelligent choice.

  • Dogs take time
Dogs are very sociable animals who dislike being alone. You need to have the time every day to spend walking, feeding, playing with your dog.

  • Energy
    Dogs need daily exercise

  • Dogs need space
Certain breeds need more space than others.Size is not always the determining factor.

  • Emotion
Dogs need your love and emotional support. They shuold be considered as a member of your family.

  • Dogs cost money
Dogs must be fed, they need health care, they need grooming.Your house will need more cleaning with a dog,and you will have to replace or repair things that puppies will damage.

  • Education
A dog taught with clarity and fun will be relaxed and happy. So you must educate yourself about dogs.

  • Male Or Female
It is often thought that males are more aggressive and females more loving. This is not always true, especially after neutering.Talk to breeders, trainers, and vets before making this choice.

  • Adult or Puppy
Adult dogs require less care than puppies but may have developed some behaviour problems and can be diffcult to train.Puppies are fun and easier to train and socialize, but require a lot of care.

  • Where To Find A Dog
Some dog owners get their dogs from breeders. There is a belief that pups taken away from the warm comfort of their mother suffer considerable stress & may exhibit behavioural problems.Shopping in a clean & well-cared-for pet shop environment, however, enables you to see a range of puppies & how they cope on their own.

Characteristics Of The 7 Major Dog Groupings

We also need to know the characteristic of dog groupings.Do not decide based on looks alone.Take your time before you decide on what breed will become this important addition to your family.

  1. Herding Group
These dogs are medium sized athletic dogs who have served for generations as herders of sheep, cattle, and other domesticated animals. They make admirable house pets and are great obedience dogs.Examples:Collies,German Shepherd.

  2. Sporting Group
This group has a high energy level with stamina and determination.Their excellent sense of smell can be a distraction when it comes to obedience training. This group should be owned by people who are active and enjoy a busy dog, none will be easy-going couch potatoes.Examples:Pointers,Retrievers.

  3. Non-Sporting Group
These dogs can not be clearly placed into any other group. It is a collection of breeds with no clear purpose other than companion dogs.Examples:Bulldogs,Dalmatian,Chinese Shar Pei.

  4. Working Group
These dogs are generally large, dominant, have courage and stamina, very territorial, and have great leadership skills.Example:Boxers,Mastiffs.

  5. The Hound Group
This category includes both Scent and Sight Hounds.Scent Hounds, like the Beagle, track prey by using their sense of smell. They are high-energy dogs that tend to be driven. They can be hard to train because of this attribute.Sight Hounds like the greyhound ,spot things visually then run it down.It is said they are "fleet or feet, slow to learn, and somewhat aloof of strangers."These dogs are more sensitive to anesthesia than other breeds.Example:Basset Hound,Basenji
