To Shaybah and Back

My Visit and What I Found There

Afer a picture-perfect landing, buses take us closer to the base. We emerge into the 113-degree heat and immediately enter an air conditioned building. We meet some of the people who work at Shaybah and are invited to enjoy Bedouin hospitality at an elaborate and sumptuous meal. Afterwards, we walk up the dunes. We feel nothing but the heat. We spend some time in a Bedouin tent that is "cooled" by fans. The sand floor is covered in the traditional array of Persian rugs of all colors. It is all somehow refreshing. Yet we yearn to return to Khobar's 100-degree heat. An evening flight returns us there.
