"I like to rent happy movies and have a happy time." Brittany Murphy, the star of such harrowing films as "Don't Say a Word" and the upcoming "8 Mile" lightens up and gives you the lowdown on what flicks to pick at the video store if you're looking to raise your spirits.
"Big"
"Big" I really loved. Tom Hanks eating the baby corn. This is a highly recommended film, a Penny Marshall movie. The year that this came out, there were four films about role-playing. The piano scene, it's a classic. Tom Hanks, Penny Marshall, you can't beat it. We're going to take this one.
"Office Space"
Just in case you don't know, the creator of "Beavis & Butthead," Mike Judge, made this movie. This was his very first live-action movie, which is a non-animation film. He's in it for like a quick millisecond.
"Dick"
This is hysterical. This is a really cute movie.
"Clueless"
If I wasn't in it, I would definitely recommend this because it's a really happy movie.
"Beverly Hills Cop"
I have to take this. This wasn't what I was planning on, but this is also a classic, and funny. I just want happiness, endorphins flowing. When you laugh you have endorphins. It's a medically proven fact. When you laugh it's healthier for your entire body.
"Annie Hall"
This is an ultimate favorite film of mine of all time. I think every single romantic comedy since this has been made — it's a Woody Allen picture, Woody Allen and Diane Keaton — every film after this has been based on "Annie Hall." They're great films, but thank God this is the basis because they basically have everything in a romantic comedy that you could possibly want in one movie. I love this movie, so we'll take this.
"Superstar"
The best comedy that I've seen in a really long time. We love this movie. This is really funny. You have to rent this. Mary Catherine Gallagher. This is the funniest film. This gets five stars from me if we're on a one to five basis, comedy-wise.
"Reality Bites"
I'm 24 now. I remember when I actually hit the age that the people were in "Reality Bites," I was a little shocked because they always seemed so much older and cooler than me — and they still are. But this film is sort of priceless and timeless and has one of my favorite actresses and friends, Winona Ryder, in it. Ben Stiller's hysterical. He directed it. Ethan Hawke is great. It pretty much captures the Gen X generation, but I'm actually not a Gen X member, I missed it by like a year or two, so I still appreciate the film. Another incredible soundtrack: U2, great '80s songs, "My Sharona" is on it. If you don't know it, watch the film and I think you'll have a newfound appreciation for "ma-ma-ma-my Sharona"
"Breakfast At Tiffany's"
This is an incredible classic.
"Cabaret" and "All That Jazz"
I wasn't going to bombard you with Bob Fosse films either, but since they're here, we have "Cabaret," which is a classic. I think it's the best World War II film ever made, in my own personal humble opinion. You have everything you want in a film. Same thing with "All That Jazz." Both of these films are definitely in my top three favorites. What other film can you have drama, comedy, dancing, music, everything, all of it? "Moulin Rouge," is the only film of modern day to sort of capture what Bob Fosse was doing in the '70s. If you're a young filmmaker, or if you have a pulse, please rent "Cabaret" and "All That Jazz." I am going to this evening.
"Shrek"
"Shrek" is incredible! This was the best movie I saw all last year. I think everybody's seen it by now about five hundred times, but this is some funny stuff. I think I'm gonna rent this too. I'm getting a little bit greedy, sorry MTV. But thank you. I really never get off time, so I might as well really lap it up, right?
"The Wedding Singer"
Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. You can't beat this. This is the perfect rental. It's just happiness, and like I said before, any Adam Sandler film, especially "Happy Gilmore," any Drew Barrymore film. The fact that they're both teamed up in this movie is incredible. And it has all '80s music.
"There's Something About Mary"
OK, this is hysterical. Look at this. Yeah, everyone's pretty much seen this anyway.
"Ali"
"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee." That movie was amazing. I learned a lot about the man, the legend, Muhammad Ali. There's a really great documentary about him as well.
Generally when I'm at a video store, I always pick way too many. You know, my eyes are bigger than what I'll actually stay awake to watch. I have too many movies at this point, so in conclusion, any Adam Sandler film, especially "Happy Gilmore," any Drew Barrymore film, "Sister Act," Whoopi Goldberg, any Penny Marshall movie, any Bob Fosse film, Woody Allen, Winona Ryder movies. We're checking out with "Cabaret," "All That Jazz," "Annie Hall," "Reality Bites," "Big," "Shrek," and most importantly, "Superstar." Let's go ring it up, guys.
