The Kurokos (Black Baby Ranchu)

Back to Home Page

Spring (March/April) is in the air and every year this is an exciting time for the ranchu breeders all over Japan. Breeding is one of the most important activities for these breeders in producing hopeful champion fish. It is also one of the most hectic times of the year for the breeders.

The day starts at 4.00 am for most to collect wild water fleas for these black baby (kuroko) ranchus. It is also a painstaking task of crouching under the hot sun, carefully culling thousands of fry. This culling goes on at least 4 to 5 rounds before we get the cream of the crop.

Every year in June, it is the time for ranchu fanatics to shop for the kurokos that these breeders had spent so many hours of labour to produce. As the BB ranchus from Japanese club breeders are only available once a year. The event is highly anticipated both by our club members and other hobbyists. The annual import of these kurokos serves as an affordable option for most of us to own these high grade ranchus.

Since the Japanese top view ranchus carry a high premium, new hobbyists can start with these kurokos and get more confident with keeping them before expanding on the hobby. Besides, the new hobbyists, even experienced hobbyists enjoy the challenge of grooming a kuroko to its full potential.

So what are you waiting for? Subscribe to our email notification and get timely notification of the arrival of these black baby ranchus and many more interesting events!
