The PERFECT Pinewood Performance Pack 877 has put together a nifty web page so you can determine how close your car is to "perfection", at least in terms of its racing performance. Click here or on the checkered flags above to visit the page. |
Please
read all these rules completely, since failure to comply with all rules will
result in disqualification, as judged by the Pack 877 Race Committee.
These rules reflect: 1) the official Cub Scout (BSA) Pinewood Derby Rules,
and 2) the Grand Canyon
Council Rules, and have been adopted by our Pack so that winners may advance
to District championships.
Rules
Highlights
Only "Cub Scout Derby -- Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kits" #17006 may be used.
An
official car kit will be distributed to each Cub Scout that ordered one
at the 12/18/01 Pack meeting. This kit, or a replacement kit of the exact same
kind, must be used.
If a mistake is made and a replacement kit is needed, additional kits may be purchased at the Scout Shop.
Cars constructed for previous or other competitions may not be reused for this year's competition.
This
is a Cub/Parent project.
The
SCOUT should at least design, sand, and paint the car. Remember that
winning a race is secondary to having fun with your son building his car.
The parent may help ONLY with:
Shaping the car, especially where power tools are used
Placing the wheels on the car
Attaching lead weights to the car
Wheelbase: approximately 4-3/16 inches. The kit's axle slots must be used.
Wheel distance: approximately 1.75 inches between wheels.
Overall width: not exceeding 2.75 inches.
Overall length: not exceeding 7 inches.
Overall height: not exceeding 3 inches (to pass beneath electronic timers).
Chassis clearance: 3/8-inch minimum. DO NOT ADD WEIGHTS TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR without chiseling a recessed area for the weights to fit into.
Weight: not exceeding 5 ounces.
The Pack 877 "official box" will be used to verify compliance with the dimensions. The box will be available during Pack weigh-in events.
Wheels can be sanded smooth but not grooved. The width and shape of the wheel tread cannot be changed, and wheels may not be hollowed out or otherwise altered, other than necessary to clean injection by-product, etc. The car may not ride on any type of springs, and must be freewheeling. Only wheels and axles provided with the official Cub Scout kit are to be used. Only dry graphite may be used as lubrication.
ANY modifications to the wheels, such as hollowing them out or narrowing or rounding the tread or hubs, are prohibited.
Wheel bearings, washers, bushings or any wheel lubrication of any kind (other than graphite powder) is prohibited.
No loose material of any kind is allowed on the car.
After the weigh-in on derby-day, the race officials will hold the racecar until race time. No alterations will be allowed after the car is weighed and checked in. The weight at weigh-in will be official. Identification numbers will be furnished at weigh-in. The inspection team has the right to disqualify those cars that do not meet official specifications.

A
preliminary weigh-in will take place at the Pack Leader's home on
Sunday Feb 24th. from 10am to 2pm. Take
advantage of this opportunity to verify your car's dimensions and weight.
All
cars must be completed by Derby day when the final weigh-in will be held according to
Den.
Once cars have been weighed, they will be held by the Pack until race time.
On Derby Day, the final weigh-in is scheduled as follows. Please arrive with your Scout and car according to the these times:
Tiger Cubs 07:30 - 08:00 a.m.
Wolves 08:00 - 08:30 a.m.
Bears 09:00 - 09:30 a.m.
Webelos 09:30 - 10:00 a.m.
During weigh-in, Scouts will have the opportunity to fine-tune their cars' weight. Axle lubrication (using only dry graphite) will be available beforehand.
Races
will be held on March 2, 2002 (Saturday) in the Kyrene De La Estrella Pavilion. Cub Scouts will not handle their
own cars prior to racing, so all fine tuning must be completed by weigh-in.
Tiger Cubs Weigh-In 7:30-8:00 am; Race 8:00 - 8:30 a.m.
Wolves Weigh-In 8:00-8:30am; Race 8:30 - 9:00 a.m.
Bears Weigh-In 9:00-9:30am; Race 9:30 - 10:00 a.m.
Webelos Weigh-In 9:30-10:00am; Race 10:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Open Class Race 10:30 - 11:00 a.m.
Awards are given to the top three fastest cars in each rank (Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos).
These
are suggestions only, not race requirements.
The car should be as close to 5 oz. as possible. The car then has the highest potential energy.
Locate the center of gravity in the top and rear of the car. The car will have more potential energy than a car with weight in the front, and hence more "push".
Reduce friction in the wheels. Polishing the axle can reduce the friction of the wheel on the axle.
Raise one of the front wheels ("lazy wheel"). If one of the wheels is raised, the drag of the wheel is eliminated. Adjust steering after the wheel is raised. Remember to maintain proper height over the track or the car may drag.
Make sure wheels are straight to minimize rubbing with the guide strip on the track.
