Dragonspell

Author: Donita K. Paul
Pages: 339
Rating: 4/5

I borrowed this book from the library on Saturday the 15th. Its difficult for me to choose a book I've never heard of. I picked up this book, because it actually sounded interesting, and plus I love dragons to begin with. Anyway, I really liked this book, and though it was YA (young adult) I'd recommend it to my friends, at least the ones who like to read fantasy.

Dragonspell is about a young o'rant girl, Kale, free from slavery. She travels to Vendela, to go to The Hall. However, she is captured by mountain trolls, and on her escape, she finds herself enchanted as she finds a gathering of dragon eggs. Collecting all the eggs, for she felt that they needed to be safe, she was rescued by Dar, a doneel, and Leetu Bends, a emerlindian.

Soon she was told that she was a Dragon Keeper, a seeker of dragon eggs to raise and protect. Two of these eggs hatched two minor dragons, Gymn the healing dragon, and Metta the singing dragon. Ooh, the tiny minor dragons! I could just imagine them fluttering around, and just found it so cute when Gymn fainted or when Metta sang.

Kale was to go on a quest to find a meech dragon egg, stolen from Paladin by the evil wizard Risto. Her journey was hard and worrysome, and at times sad, but you'd have to read the book to find out what really happens.

I found all the characters, except the bad ones, adorable! Especially the kimen, which were tiny cheerful characters who collected and controlled light. For some reason kimen always reminded me of moogles from Final Fantasy. But they are so adorable, and I found myself smiling at their cuteness, as ridiculous as that sounds. Because kimen collect light, they gather light around them as their clothing. Here is a quote from the book that I especially found just adorable.

"Your lights weren't shining."
Seezle giggled. "You saw our underwear."
Shimeran gave his sister an impatient look.

Kale was a very interesting character. She was always insecure about herself, scolding herself that she knew nothing and had a lot to learn. She was a lost girl, always confused and questioning those around her. I guess I just found her interesting.

Wizard Fenworth really reminded me of Treebeard from Lord of the Rings. He was always forgetful but wise, and would sprout leaves if he was still, sometimes looking like a bush. Sometimes he would "tut tut" and say something that would confuse both him and the listener.

I really recommend this book. Especially for anyone who likes cute adorable creatures.
