Eragon

Author: Christopher Paolini
Series: Inheritance Trilogy
Pages: 509
Rating: 4/5
Read: 1

Despite much similarity with the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Legend of Earthsea, I liked Eragon. I liked the story and the characters and especially Saphira. I liked her hatching; I could imagine this tiny cute dragon coming out of an shiny blue egg, and even when she grows, she's smart and sarcastic.

Eragon is a kid living with his uncle and his son. While hunting in the Spine, he finds a blue stone. It turns out that the stone was actually a dragon egg. During the night, a tiny blue dragon hatched out of it. Eragon decides to keep it, and hides it in the forest near his home. Asking the village story teller Brom about dragons, Eragon figures out the dragon's name is Saphira. In the village, Eragon learns of two hooded strangers called Raz'ac asking about the stone, and rushes home to warn his uncle and Saphira. Telling Saphira first, she flies him in the Spine and they stay there. Saphira's scales scratch up Eragon's legs, so he couldn't walk. When they return, they find Eragon's house destroyed, and his uncle in horrible condition.

His uncle dies. Eragon is detemined to avenge his uncle, and he and Saphira start to leave. They are confronted by Brom, who insists that he come to teach Eragon the ways of a Dragon Rider.

I liked this book, regardless of its similarities with some other series. Its not really original, but its a story, none the less. I recommend it to you if you've never read or seen Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Earthsea, or anything else before. I mean, the whole losing-family-going-to-kill-for-revenge thing is so from Star Wars. The names and places are so similiar to the names and places of LotR. And the whole concept of magic and true names is Earthsea's. Any other similiarities, I wouldn't know yet. But thats why Eragon is not original.

But if you like dragons, magic, werecats, witches, elves, and dwarves, read it!
