Georgia is a small country located in the Caucasus Mountains in Southeastern Europe surrounded by Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Russia. As the result of the recent war with Russia, massive numbers of war refugees that have come to the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, and the country's social and humanitarian aid programs are overwhelmed. The orphanages in Georgia were getting minimal government support before the war but the current situation has left the orphanages in pressing need of many things. The baby house in Tbilisi houses approximately 200 children ages 0 to 4-years-old. Because of their young age, the children in the Tbilisi baby house are particularly affected by the current situation. Medical supplies are the most pressing need but other basics such as adequate formula, baby food and diapers are also needed.
One of the most pressing needs at the baby house right now is various medicines, vitamins, and baby formula. We are setting-up an ongoing program where medicines, vitamins, and baby formula will be delivered to the baby house on a regular basis.
There are a number of kids in the baby house who were born with a twisted foot and/and hand. This condition is quite common and is treated easily in the West with a series of casts and physical therapy. In Georgia, many such children are left at the baby house by their parents because they are unable to provide medical care for the condition. At the moment these children do not get the casts and physical therapy they need in the baby house and they grow up crippled and doomed for life. We are asking for donations to address this basic medical issue which would make a world of difference to these kids. It could literally give them a new life as it would improve their chances of being adopted. We have already identified several children who need casts or braces and ongoing physical therapy. When we have enough the funds we will arrange for the appropriate casts or braces to be fitted and hiring a physical therapist to train volunteers to work with the children on an ongoing basis. For as little as $50, we can buy a pair of basic soft braces for a child. There are at least 20 children waiting for help. Our goal is to raise $200 per child to cover the expense of the braces ($50), a visit to a physical therapist to fit the braces ($100), and a training session for a volunteer who can then provide physical therapy for the child ($50).
